Garden works at Balaclava State School
A community service committee of Cairns West Rotary, under the direction of Jim McDowall and Em Stephens combined with the students of Balaclava State School in a project to beautify the school grounds. A swampy comer of the school grounds was filled and the pupils instructed how to correctly plant hibiscus and bougainvillea’s to be trained to produce a rising sun effect. The necessary shrubs were provided by the Club and the soil to fill the swampy area was donated by Fred Moule.

Lawns and landscaping provided and installed at Good Samaritan Hospital.
A major project involved planting of lawn and landscaping of the Good Samaritan Hospital, which up to the end of June 1966, had taken 671 man hours and 19 tractor hours, and was carried on for another four months before it was completed. The hospital offered to erect a plaque in recognition of the work carried out by the Club, the Directors declined.

The Club was instrumental some years ago, in establishing a reference library at the Cairns School of Arts. During the year, Vocational Service brought this library up to date with the addition of 59 new books, 32 other publications and statistical data from the Consulates of approximately 12 Overseas Countries not previously represented in the library.
